Abstract (Networks of things)

Materiality is at the hearth of exchange. This lecture investigates the part played by things, including not only commodities, but also animals, containers and vessels, in interconnecting the ancient world, and the role of cities in production, distribution and redistribution of all these things.

Abstract (Networks of people)

Trade rests on the interaction of people. In this lecture we look at how social networks consisting of craftsmen, traders, and different kinds of elites, depended on cities in order to integrate networks into institutional, ideological, economic, political and social settings.
