The Contacts between Scandinavia and the Baltic region in the Viking age were in many respects different from those to the West. In the East there were no towns and monasteries to rob. Here it was necessary to create wealth through trade, tributes and various alliances. In North-Western Europe fur trade was a most important factor and there are various signs that Scandinavians also took part here. At the same time vast amounts of Oriental silver reached north Europe.

Going out from a certain group of silver rings known mainly from the regions west of the Urals and parts of Scandinavia, I will discuss the use of silver and the art of connections going out from a certain type of silver rings and discuss where they were made and how they might have been made.
