Outline

The Ayyubid-Mamluk periods in the Levant have been a topic of research for decades. However, the common wares (pottery) of these periods have until recently received little attention. These wares are, however, much better represented in the archaeological record than earlier thought. This conference focuses on the nature of new evidence, which have come to light within the last years. There will be a particular focus on Jerash in the Middle Islamic period and the evidence coming from the Danish-German Jerash Northwest Quarter Project’s excavations, which have been ongoing since 2011. Other regions and case studies will, however, also be presented to bring in a comparative perspective in order to begin to discuss these periods through the material culture and in particular the pottery of everyday life in the region.
