Abstract:

The Danish-German led excavations of the North-West Quarter in Jerash have yielded an interesting array of metal artefacts from the Roman through to the Islamic periods. The finds represent evidence for iron and lead-working as well as jewellery and coinage throughout the city’s history. This seminar will summarise some of the results to date from investigations into the copper-alloy artefacts, a hoard of metal deposited in a wooden box, as well as the everyday coinage used during the Roman and Umayyad periods. Finally, some of the other ongoing metal projects will be introduced with the aim of contextualising the metal finds in everyday life at Jerash.
