Abstract

The lecture will look at iron smelting and smithing technologies as they relate to society and culture. Technological aspects of the trade will be explored across different geographies, providing an historical overview of the material. Related to our ongoing PhD-projects, we focus on East Africa and Scandinavia to provide examples on how high definition archaeology can transform our understanding of the material and inform us of the role of iron in the developing urban networks.
