Abstract

This lecture introduces a research project investigating the socio-economic impacts of Anglo-Norwegian trade in its European context between the Viking Age and the emergence of the Hanseatic League. Using three archaeological proxies (walrus ivory, cod bones and whetstones) it is establishing the spatial and chronological development of long-range trade during a period of major European economic, demographic and urban growth. It is exploring how the expansion of towns and rural production in Norway, and of population and ports in eastern England, were reciprocal manifestations of the same emerging north-south trade – and how the actions of rural producers influenced these developments.

This lecture will be part of a double-lecture event. The second lecture will be given by Advisor Lars Holger Pilø, Kulturarv, Oppland Fylkeskommune: http://urbnet.au.dk/events/show/artikel/secrets-of-the-ice-an-introduction-to-the-field-of-glacial-archaeology/

Please note the lecture will take place at Moesgård Museum. The easiest way is to enter through the back entrance (see photo 1, photo 2 and photo 3 for directions).
