This paper argues that Roman altars functioned not only as ritual surfaces but also as visual frames that structured religious experience. Focusing on Mithraic altars from Britain and Syria, I examine how altars positioned before cult images created sacred zones within temple spaces, mediating worshippers' visual and bodily encounters with the divine.
