Associate Professor Sarah Croix receives grant from the Augustinus Foundation for a new research project on social upheaval in times of religious change
The Augustinus Foundation has granted nearly 5 million DKK to Associate Professor Sarah Croix for a new research project to be conducted in close collaboration between Aarhus University and the Museums of Northern Jutland, Vesthimmerlands Museum, Museum Østjylland and MoMu.
The project, in Danish “Samfundsbrud og indførelsen af kristendommen i Danmarks senvikingetid”, will track down how and how quickly social dynamics among local communities transformed as Christianization progressed in Denmark in the late Viking Age. It will apply the principles of high-definition chronologies to assess tempi of change in the mortuary landscape of selected regions of Northern and Eastern Jutland.
The project idea was developed at UrbNet by gleaning methodological and organizational inspiration from multiple successful projects, including the recently completed “Northern Emporium” project (PI Søren M. Sindbæk) to which Sarah Croix was one of the key contributors.
Sarah Croix has been tenured Associate Professor since February 2024 as the second UrbNet-embedded position at the School of Culture and Society and the Department of Archaeology and Heritage studies.
