Forgotten cities and towns – Rediscovering past urban societies through legacy data

Last week the workshop, Forgotten cities and towns – Rediscovering past urban societies through legacy data, took place at UrbNet.

Invited researchers from across Europe came together to share their experiences on working with archaeological archive data. The workshop was intentionally cross-discipline, bringing together researchers from diverse regions and time periods to stimulate thoughtful discussions and new ways of dealing with their own data; hopefully forging new collaborative endeavours. Work presented ranged from the creation of archive data over the long-term at large scale excavations, and how to then deal with it, to the careful research of photographic and personal archives to rediscover the lost provenance of museum objects.

The workshop was organized by Sarah Croix, Rowan English, and Rubina Raja from UrbNet and Charlotte Marie Brühe Jensen from Nordjyske Museer. The papers given at the workshop will be published in a forthcoming special issue of Journal of Urban Archaeology.

In connection with the workshop, some of the participants returned for a second day of discussions in the form of a PhD course - Legacy Data in Urban Archaeology: Unleashing Past Excavation Records in Current Research. This course gave the chance for PhD students to hear best practice for using archival data in their own research, while also presenting their own work for constructive feedback from experienced researchers.
