Glass recycling as a lens to urban networks: a view from the Mediterranean and beyond

On May 9, the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters in Copenhagen hosted the one-day workshop 'Glass recycling as a lens to urban networks: a view from the Mediterranean and beyond (3rd century BC-8th century CE)'.

The participants to the workshop at the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters in Copenhagen. From left to right: Sarah Paynter (Historic England, UK), Rubina Raja (UrbNet, Aarhus University, Denmark), Ana Franjic (Leuven University, Belgium), Cristina Boschetti (UrbNet, Aarhus University, Denmark), Patryck Degryse (Leuven University, Belgium), Caroline Jackson (University of Sheffiled, UK), Artemios Oikonomou (The Cyprus Institute, Greece), Francesca Colangeli (University of Genoa, Italy), Silvia Berrica (Escuela Española de Historia y Arqueología de Roma, Spain).

Seven guest speakers from Belgium, Greece, Italy, Spain and the UK conveyed in Copenhagen to debate on the urban dimension of glass recycling in ancient societies. The workshop challenged the connections between glass recycling, circular economy, and the economy of cities, with an interdisciplinary approach and on  a broad geographic and chronological horizon. The study of circular economy, intended as an economic system aiming at reducing to the minimum resource input and waste, is one of the leading research paths pursued at UrbNet since the establishment of the center. The result of this exciting day of exchange and debate will be published in form of a special issue of Journal of Urban Archaeology.

The workshop was organized by Cristina Boschetti, postdoctoral researcher at UrbNet, and by Rubina Raja, professor of Classical Archaeology and director of UrbNet, thanks to the financial support of the Carlsberg Research Fundation.
