Introduction of David van Oeveren (Utrecht University)
Visiting PhD student at UrbNet.
David van Oeveren is a PhD student from the Cultural History Department at Utrecht University. He is part of the "Constructing the Limes" research project, led by Saskia Stevens. The project investigates the impact of the Lower German Limes on migration and the import of goods and crops in antiquity. However, it also focuses on how the Limes becomes visible as cultural heritage today and how it has influenced our contemporary views on borders. As a cultural historian, David examines nineteenth and twentieth-century excavations from a bottom-up perspective, emphasizing the importance of 'amateur archaeologists' or 'fortune diggers' in the role of knowledge production and heritage policymaking.
