Introduction of María Coto-Sarmiento
New postdoc at UrbNet (MINERVA project).
María Coto-Sarmiento is a computational archaeologist specialized in exploring cultural dynamics in past societies. In 2020, she completed her PhD in Archaeology at the University of Barcelona and Barcelona Supercomputing Center, where she applied her transdisciplinary research between Humanities and Computer Science to explore the innovation processes behind social learning in pottery production. She holds a five-year degree (Licenciatura) in History and Archaeology and an MSc in Archaeology and Cultural Heritage, both at University of Sevilla (Spain). She has carried out research stays at the University of Pisa (Italy) and the University of Edinburgh (UK). As an archaeologist, she has fieldwork experience in Spain and Kazakhstan.
Before joining UrbNet and the MINERVA project, she was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Tübingen (Germany) within the ERC Starting Grant PALAEOSILKROAD Project.
At UrbNet/MINERVA, she will work to identify economic trends in Roman trade by combining applications of computational models and archaeological data. She is also concerned with open science practices and transparency in research.
