Introduction of Rowan English
New PhD student at UrbNet.
I am an early medieval archaeologist, whose interests lie in the materials and funerary archaeology of 5th-7th century North-western Europe. I arrive at UrbNet having just completed my MPhil in Medieval archaeology at Churchill College, Cambridge. My research in Cambridge was based on mapping the presence and dating elephant ivory in furnished graves in 5th to 7th century England.
My work here will continue to chart the presence of elephant ivory in graves of the early medieval period across Northwest Europe and attempt to map its origins and the routes it travelled to reach these graves. My research also aims to consider other exotics materials, such as coral and cowrie shells that appear in these graves, and how there flows of movement may have differed between such materials.
