Introduction of Stelios Ieremias

New postdoc at UrbNet.

Stelios Ieremias obtained his BA from the University of Athens and continued for an MSt and DPhil from the University of Oxford. He specialises in Greek terracottas and sculpture, especially from the regions of Thessaly and Aitoloakarnania. He joined the UrbNet to work on a project on the votives (sculpture, terracottas, wooden and stone objects) from the sanctuary of Artemis Brauronia, one of the major sanctuaries of Attica, which has not yet received a synthetic and holistic study on the dedicatory practices. The sanctuary of Artemis at Brauron is a major extra-urban sanctuary of Athens and the project will also investigate how this shrine outside of the city attracted worshippers, the ways in which people from the city were transported there, and from where they acquired their votives. In the 6th century BCE, an annex sanctuary was founded on top of the Athenian Acropolis, indicating the great importance of this cult.
