SSHRC Grant for New Investigations at UNESCO World Heritage site L’Anse aux Meadows

Assistant Professor Thomas Birch is a member of the core team.

The Canadian Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) have awarded an Insight Grant for the 5-year project “Biocultural and archaeological legacies at L’Anse aux Meadows”, headed by Dr Veronique Forbes of Memorial University of Newfoundland. Assistant Professor Thomas Birch is a principal collaborator named on the project, whose task will be to assist directly in site excavations and lead analytical investigations of any material culture remains that may be recovered. The project aims to revisit the chronology of the site after new results from recent excavations indicate a much longer and more nuanced chronology. A new cultural horizon found at the site indicates that Norse activity may have lasted for a century (Ledger et al. 2019).
