The Archaeology of Seasonality

New anthology edited by Professor Achim Lichtenberger (Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster) and Centre Director Professor Rubina Raja.

Lichtenberger, A. & Raja, R. (eds.) (2021). The Archaeology of Seasonality, Studies in Classical Archaeology 11, Turnhout.

In this new edited volume, the topic of seasonality is studied through archaeological evidence stemming from the discipline of classical archaeology. Seasonality, which is the passage of time and change in the environment across the course of a year, has remained a neglected aspect of human-nature relationships. The Archaeology of Seasonality, which is the first of its kind to tackle wide-ranging aspects of seasonality, aims at changing this situation.

The 23 contributions draw on different archaeological evidence to explore the archaeology of the seasons from a number of different perspectives – including economic strategies, catastrophic events, religious activities, iconography, and the role of the individual. Together, they offer a pioneering new approach to classical archaeology that will hopefully further our understanding of the temporal dimensions to archaeological evidence.

The anthology stems from a conference of the same name that was organised by Achim Lichtenberger and Rubina Raja in the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters in October 2019. The conference was co-funded by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation; Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster and Centre for Urban Network Evolutions (UrbNet), Aarhus University.

The Archaeology of Seasonality is volume 11 in the series ‘Studies in Classical Archaeology’ (SCA), published by Brepols Publishers.
