Zanzibar's hidden history
A new podcast produced by the Zanzibar excavation team in collaboration with the Department of Antiquities on Zanzibar.
A podcast, produced by the Zanzibar excavation team in collaboration with the Department of Antiquities on Zanzibar, is now available on SoundCloud here.
The podcast positions the site of Unguja Ukuu as part of a remarkable moment in world history, when regions were connected by ever-expanding networks of trade. Unguja Ukuu was an important site in that trade but is often overshadowed by Zanzibar’s later sites, particularly in the popular imagination. This podcast will be advertised in museums on Zanzibar, in an attempt to generate knowledge of this early urban moment among tourists on the archipelago.
The episode is funded by the University of York Impact Accelerator Fund (Dr Stephanie Wynne-Jones) and produced by Philippa Geering.
