Abstract

With this talk, I wish to highlight my recent and ongoing case studies on two find categories from K23, a single construction phase in Ribe dating to the early 9th century. These are helpful not only in providing a snapshot of the town's position within the wider trading network, but also in highlighting how urban practices of production and consumption instigate social and cultural transformations across this network.

In doing so, I furthermore want to develop some methodological reflections on the study of portable material culture from the perspective of connectivity. Due to the nature of the available evidence and of previous work, both case studies have presented distinct but similar challenges, requiring a critical approach to both data and analysis.
